Goal of School Health Education:
The intent of school health education is to teach and assess students on:
- an awareness and understanding to the self of age appropriate fundamental health concepts,
- the application to self and others of essential health skills in order to navigate various influences on health behavior,
- and strategeis to make health promoting decisions which lead to developing and maintaining lifelong health-enhancing behaviors.
What is School Health Education?
School Health Education is a K – HS comprehensive sequential instructional program which teaches and assesses the functional health knowledge, essential health skills, and core health concepts necessary for students to demonstrate and apply responsible health promoting decision-making strategies in order to reduce risk taking behavior, achieve Health Literacy and develop lifelong wellbeing. Topic areas within School Health Education include:
- Understanding Health and Wellness
- Understanding and Promoting Good Mental Health
- Chronic and Infectious Disease Prevention
- Lifetime Physical Fitness and Nutrition
- Intentional and Unintentional Injury Prevention
- Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Prevention
- Reproductive Health and Safety Education
What is Health Literacy?
Health Literacy:
- The capacity of an individual to obtain, interpret, and understand basic health information and services, the competence to use such information and services in ways that are health enhancing, the ability to demonstrate and apply health actions in day to day activities, and advocacy for good health in others.
What is Health?
Health:
- An integrated method of functioning reflective of the interaction of the physical, mental, emotional, social, spiritual, cultural, and intellectual aspects of well being enabling persons to adequately deal with the self and others in a variety of personal and social situations.
